Students will be able to create a drawing that demonstrates knowledge of balance (drawing must fill page and run off of all sides), repetition (drawing must have an element repeated) and unity (drawing must unite all sides of page together, there should be no random, unrelated elements). After these 9th graders mastered contour line drawing, they were all asked to bring in their favorite shoe. Not surprisingly, 9th grade girls and boys have a favorite shoe. With this as their subject matter, each student drew as many different views of their shoe as they could (top, bottom pattern, sides) Then they combined these views onto one page keeping in mind the concept of unity as it applies to a successful composition. Each element on the page should try to speak to the elements around it. With this as our rather abstract goal, students used patterns found on their shoes to connect the elements in the composition. Students were encouraged to see how negative shapes left over could be shaded to create balance. This project allows students to become acquainted with one or all of the art principals. In addition, students start to build a vocabulary that will allow them to critique their own work.
